Joseph HINKLE of Boston, a lawyer, died Thursday in his Beacon Hill home. He
was 54. Mr. Hinkle was born in Boston and raised in Brookline. He attended
the Dexter School and St. Mark's School. He graduated from Yale University
in 1964 and from Harvard Law School in 1967.
After law school, he began
working at the law firm of Hill & Barlow. He became a partner in 1974. A
longtime resident of Beacon Hill, he was involved with many civic
organizations and was recently awarded the Beacon Award by the Beacon Hill
Civic Association for his volunteer efforts. He was on the board of
directors of the Beacon Hill Nursery and Hill House, and was a member of the
Beacon Hill Civic Association, the Boston Artery Focus Group, and the
Charles River Basin Citizens Advisory Committee. He was also involved
with the Cambridge Street Community Development Corporation and helped in
the restoration of the Peter Faneuil School in Boston. He served on the
board of the former China Trade Museum in Milton and helped with its merger
with Peabody Museum of Salem. After its merger with the Essex Institute, he
became vice president of the Peabody Essex Museum board. He was a longtime
supporter of the Boston Symphony and enjoyed curling at The Country Club in
Brookline. He and his family summered on Cape Cod, where he enjoyed
sailing and won the long-distance trophy for the Osterville to Edgartown
Race. He leaves his wife, Sarah (Ropes); a son, Edward Ropes Hinkle of
Somerville; a daughter, Sarah Dickson Hinkle of New York City; a brother,
James G. of Cummaquid; and a sister, Sydney Buffum of Florida and Rhode
Island. A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in King's Chapel
in Boston. Burial will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday in Beechwood Cemetery in
Centerville |
