Exploring Family History Through Film - The Last Ring Home

Screening and talk back with Minter Dial

The Last Ring Home is a half-hour award-winning WWII documentary that traces the incredible story of the Annapolis ring of US Navy officer and hero, Lt Minter Dial.

It's a moving story, one of love, courage and honor, that portrays values, relationships and behaviors that crystallize the Greatest Generation. Born in South Carolina, son of a senator, and a graduate of the Annapolis Naval Academy in 1932, Dial represented the best of the southern heritage and the finest of the Navy tradition. He married a worldly, beautiful and charming actress, Lisa Porter, with whom he shared a powerful romance and had two children. But when duty called, in the summer of 1941, Dial was assigned to the Philippines where he captained the USS Napa at the war's outset and won the Navy Cross.

He then became a Prisoner of War (POW) of the Japanese at the fall of Corregidor in May 1942. Dial survived under the most inhumane conditions where over 40% of the Allied prisoners held in the Philippines died, only to die himself after 2 1/2 years of imprisonment under friendly fire.

After being mortally wounded, Dial's last wish made to a fellow prisoner and close friend was to have his Annapolis ring returned to his loving wife. But the ring never made it in the ensuing chaos. But the story of the ring didn't stop there.

An extraordinary part of  The Last Ring Home is the incredible serendipity that followed the ring. The whole story lay dormant, until a fortuitous telephone call out of the blue in 1992 to Minter

Dial’s grandson, named after him, that gave the story life again. The Last Ring Home uncovers the mystery of how the ring was lost and found and, importantly, the lasting legacy it had on all those it touched. It is a touching tribute to the members of the Greatest Generation and a reminder of what is truly important.
