The Performing Arts at Yale

In conjunction with the beginning of the Tercentennial celebration, the Fall 2000 Assembly was devoted to the performing arts at Yale: music, drama, and dance. Plenary sessions examined the history, teaching and learning, and the future of the performing arts at Yale. Delegates toured Yale performance arts sites, sampled performances in the residential colleges and attended workshops that included a drama scene rehearsal, a conducting workshop, and a dance choreography session. Leading figures at the School of Drama and the School of Music, along with other distinguished Yale faculty and alumni, who are leaders in the area of the performing arts, guided the exploration of this vital aspect of every student’s experience of Yale.

Registration and Lunch

Delegates and guests may register for Assembly beginning at 8:30 a.m. at the Rose Alumni House at 232 York Street. New Delegates will attend the New Delegate Orientation Luncheon to be held from 12:30 p.m. to 1:45 p.m. in the President's Room in Woolsey Hall. All others who register for lunch will receive tickets for eating in the University Dining Hall of their choice from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

A Retrospective on the Performing Arts at Yale
2:00 p.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Assembly Chair Susan Addiss '69 MPH, '69 MUrS will introduce Assembly LVII. In this opening plenary, we will hear about the many ways in which artistic expression has flourished at Yale. The panelists will include Thomas Duffy, Director of University Bands, Professor of Music and newly named Associate Dean of the School of Music, and Alexander Timbers '01 of the Yale Dramatic Association, which is celebrating its one hundredth anniversary as Yale's largest undergraduate theater group and the nation's second oldest college theatre association. The panel will be moderated by Benjamin Mordecai, Professor and Chairman of the Theatre Management Program at the School of Drama who also serves as Associate Dean for Administration at the School. Professor Mordecai will join the panelists in addressing not only his own area of expertise, but also in reviewing some of the most memorable moments in the history of theatre and music at Yale.

Self Guided Tour of Yale Performance Arts Spaces
4:00 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Delegates are invited to visit some of the spaces that are most important to the performing arts at Yale. Docents will be available at a number of locations on campus to provide a short tour of their spaces. While all locations are within walking distance of each other on central campus, vans will be available to transport those who prefer. Locations may include the Yale Repertory Theatre, the Cabaret Theatre, the stunning new Music Library, Drama School sites such as the costume shop and set shop, the Collection of Musical Instruments, the University Theatre and the just opened Black Box Theatre in a newly renovated space at 1156 Chapel Street.

Dinner and Performances with Students in the Residential Colleges
6:00 p.m.

At Registration, the AYA will assign a dinner reservation in a residential college, where students from that college who are active in the performing arts will serve as hosts. After dinner, the delegates will move to the Master's House or the Common Room for a short performance by the students.

Reception at Rose Alumni House
9:00 p.m.

After your dinner and performance, come back to Alumni House to share your experience with others.

Board of Governors Election Information Session
8:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Third year delegates interested in learning more about the Board of Governors and the election process are invited to this meeting with members of the Board and AYA staff. Continental breakfast will be provided.

Continental Breakfast
7:45 a.m. to 8:30 a.m.

Those who register for continental breakfast will receive tickets for Davenport College.

Teaching and Learning the Performing Arts at Yale
9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m.

Yale is unique in that it not only has a vibrant undergraduate academic and extracurricular performing arts culture, but also two outstanding professional schools: the School of Music and the Drama School. This morning we will be joined by the leaders of both the undergraduate and graduate programs, Leon Plantinga '64 PhD, Director of the Music Department, Marc Robinson '90 MFA, '92 DFA, Director of the Theater Studies Department, Robert Blocker, Dean of the School of Music and Stanley Wojewodski, Dean of the School of Drama. In a panel moderated by Theater Studies professor Murray Biggs, they will discuss and answer questions about the challenges and rewards of teaching the performing arts at Yale today.

Breakout Sessions: Artists at Work
11:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Delegates will have the opportunity to choose one session from a menu of breakouts designed to provide a glimpse into the artistic process. Choices may include a working scene rehearsal, conducting workshop, dance choreography session or digital music demonstration. More information on the selections will be available in the final program and at Registration, where sign-up sheets will be available.

Information Session Luncheon
1:00 p.m. to 2:15 p.m.

Delegates will be assigned to lunches at sites around campus where University administrators will host and provide an informal opportunity to learn about aspects of the University's operation. The format will be somewhat different from the past three Assemblies, allowing for a more focused set of comments and discussion with administrators.

The Future of the Performing Arts at Yale
2:30 to 4:00 p.m.

Yale College Dean Richard Brodhead '68, '72 PhD and Deputy Provost for the Arts Diana E.E. Kleiner share their views on the future of the performing arts at Yale, including a preview of an ambitious plan to support and advance the arts at Yale. The panel will be moderated by Corporation member Roland Betts '68 who will give us his thoughts on the performing arts at Yale from a Corporation member's perspective as well as from his lifelong career interests in the entertainment industry.

Concert with Fenno Heath
4:15 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Delegates will have a unique opportunity to hear the world premier performance of a new choral group directed by former Director of the Yale University Glee Club and Marshall Bartholomew Professor Emeritus Fenno Heath '50, '52 MusB, '52 MusM. This is one that you won't want to miss! At the conclusion of the concert, Mr. Heath will share some of his own thoughts on the role of the performing arts at Yale.

Cocktails and Yale Alumni Fund Chairman's Award Dinner Featuring Joseph Polisi
6:15 p.m.

Delegates will be joined by a other Yale volunteer leaders as we celebrate alumni involvement with the University at a dinner in Commons, which will include the presentation of the Yale Alumni Fund Chairman's Awards. Following dinner, keynote speaker Joseph Polisi '73 MusM, '75 MusAM, '80 MusAD, President of the Julliard School of Music will deliver remarks, addressing the role of the Performing Arts at both Yale and among institutions of higher education in general. Mr. Polisi is one of Yale's most prominent graduates in the Performing Arts and one of the nation's outstanding Arts educators.

Report from the Board of Governors
Presidential University Update

8:45 to 10:00 a.m.

Delegates will convene for a short report from the AYA Board of Governors. Immediately following the report, Yale President Richard C. Levin '74 PhD will provide an update on University issues of interest to alumni leaders.
Continental breakfast will be provided.

Graduate and Professional School Alumni and Yale College Classes Meetings
10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m.

This is an opportunity for delegates to learn more about and raise issues concerning volunteer activities, programming and communications throughout the year.

Conversation with Members of the Yale Corporation
11:15 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Delegates who pre-register on the enclosed form will have the opportunity for a conversation with a member or members of the Yale Corporation. Please note that these sessions are open only to delegates; those who pre-register will receive details for the session in their registration packets.

Lunch at Coxe Cage
11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

All delegates are invited to the AYA's traditional fall indoor tailgate to celebrate the many athletic pursuits of Yale's students. After the tailgate, delegates may attend the Yale vs. Columbia football game. Later that afternoon, your football ticket stub will get you into the Yale vs. Columbia men's soccer game in the soccer-lacrosse stadium or the women's volleyball game vs. Dartmouth at the Payne Whitney Gym in the John J. Lee Amphitheater. Both contests begin at 4:00 p.m. In addition, the hockey season will be underway at 7:00 p.m. with an exhibition game at Ingalls Rink against Moncton University of Canada. Please indicate the number of football tickets you will need on the enclosed registration form.
