 "China as Exception? China's Response

to the Global Recession, 2008-Present"

Many writers have claimed that China has been the great exception to the 2008 Great Global Recession, which is now in its third year. This talk argues that China, while exceptional, has been and continues to be deeply affected by the economic slowdown. We will examine Beijing's response to the crisis and some of the ongoing economic and social challenges that it poses.

Peter J. Carroll specializes in the social and cultural history of 19th and 20th century China. His research interests include urban history, Chinese modernism, popular and material culture, gender/sexuality, and nationalism.
