Join Palmetto Bluff’s archaeologists and local community members for a spring cleaning of Rephraim Cemetery.

The cemetery began as a place of burial for the people enslaved on Rephaim Plantation, a plantation once owned by Thomas F. Drayton, a Confederate general. After the Civil War, the cemetery was used by freed people and their descendants. Among the over 300 graves are those of two Union soldiers, formerly enslaved men who enlisted and fought for freedom. Rephraim Cemetery is still an active cemetery.

We’ll trim, rake, reset headstones, and remove trash and debris. Please bring gloves, brooms, rakes, blowers, trimmers, mowers, or other equipment. We will provide trash bags, water, and insect repellent.

We recommend wearing boots and long pants.

Participation is limited. You must register ahead of time to receive a gate pass.
