This situation is a sharp turnabout from much of the 20th century. And the trend has recently spread to include voters of color. Why has the working class shifted right, while educated professionals have shifted left, and how will the class inversion affect the 2024 election? David Leonhardt '94 -- a Pulitzer Prize-winning columnist at The New York Times and the author of the recent book, Ours Was the Shining Future: The Story of American Dream -- is a currently senior fellow at the Jackson School, and Leonhardt will discuss these questions with Dean James Levinsohn of the Jackson School. Cities are responsible for roughly 70% of global greenhouse gas emissions and play a critical role in addressing climate change. The impacts of climate change have forced cities and towns to address a myriad of complex social, economic, and environmental challenges while relying on increasingly strained infrastructure, energy systems, and ecosystems — especially in the Global South. This program is committed to the growth of its participants and acceleration of solutions that will create and transform cities we need for an equitable and regenerative future.

For more information including program details and schedule overview please visit the Urban Climate Leadership Certificate Program website. Applications are due April 30, 2024.

Business, law, and society are inseparable and interdependent. Corporations, social enterprises, and government entities make decisions that reverberate throughout society. At the same time, the actions of individuals and communities significantly impact the business, legal, economic, and political organizations around them.

In our increasingly interconnected world, we need intellectually curious, rigorously analytical, and deeply ethical leaders who embrace this interdependence and deploy innovative strategies to build a more equitable world while achieving strategic objectives. Join us for an exploration of how Yale is answering that call through a commitment to developing a new generation of scholars, practitioners, and leaders dedicated to the shared ideals of excellence and social prosperity.

Join us for a conversation with Andrew Burgie '87 from YASC and Victoria Varela from Lotus House Women's Shelter, to learn more about YASC's plans in Miami. During this session, you will hear about our plans for a two day pilot service program in January 2025 to benefit the women, youth, and children of Miami. Sheltering 1,550+ women, youth and children annually, Lotus House is the largest women’s homeless shelter in the country. The organization provides shelter, resources, and multi-faceted, comprehensive supportive services to help their guests successfully exit the shelter system and lead lives of greater opportunity.

Working alongside Victoria, Community Outreach Director for Lotus House, we will discuss service projects including taking inventory and record keeping, landscaping and gardening, painting, culinary and other prep work. We will also discuss timing, group size (anticipated 30 Yale volunteers), registration, and other details. YASC will leverage this opportunity to explore a full length service program to Miami in the future. Andrew will moderate the discussion.

If you are interested in this domestic service opportunity and would like to join us, this is a great opportunity to learn how you can make a difference, ask questions, and get involved. This event will be recorded.

Structural reparations are necessary to resolve the continued “badges of slavery.” Dr. Chisolm-Straker explores the major contributors to structural precarity in the U.S., and which policies may be highest-yield for White citizens to get in right relationship with Black citizens. Further, Dr. Chisolm-Straker explores decolonization’s relationship with structural reparations and as a challenge to the existing U.S. wealth paradigm, to envision a nation of abundance for all people. https://yale.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_BQQWfbFcQNWQQaYScImGqw false

Set at 1980s Yale, Bright College Years captures the timeless Yale experience (says one reviewer) in a unique blend of fact and fiction. You and your gang of college friends are in it (you will find), along with themes of memory, time, identity, change, and the impact of those formative years on one’s future trajectory. In this fun online session Andrew will talk about how he came to write the book, how it has resonated with Yalies of multiple generations, what it’s like to dredge up memories that are good, bad, and sometimes ugly, and how one is to go about relating to earlier, somewhat less palatable versions of oneself. When a former close friend and rival is murdered, world-weary but still aspiring optimist Jeffrey goes back to the beginning, to those fraught college years at Yale and to her, to make sense of what happened — only to discover that what most needs making sense of is himself. By turns smart, funny, and heart-wrenching, Bright College Years tracks Jeff and an ensemble cast as they navigate the shortest, gladdest, most complex years of life — and then the rest of it. Coming of age doesn’t only happen to the young. Andrew is a philosophy professor and author of four novels. He was pre-med at Yale but promptly changed his mind during a medical school interview upon being confronted with a cadaver, and bolted the opposite direction into philosophy where there are far fewer cadavers. He is also an accomplished songwriter who, if he could sing better, might have become a musician (and is perpetually seeking talented artists who are looking for material to cover). He always treasured his Yale experience and friends, but didn’t realize just how much it all meant to him until he wrote this book. More info about Andrew, Bright College Years, and his other works may be found at www.andrewpessin.com. false
