Set at 1980s Yale, Bright College Years captures the timeless Yale experience (says one reviewer) in a unique blend of fact and fiction. You and your gang of college friends are in it (you will find), along with themes of memory, time, identity, change, and the impact of those formative years on one’s future trajectory. In this fun online session Andrew will talk about how he came to write the book, how it has resonated with Yalies of multiple generations, what it’s like to dredge up memories that are good, bad, and sometimes ugly, and how one is to go about relating to earlier, somewhat less palatable versions of oneself. When a former close friend and rival is murdered, world-weary but still aspiring optimist Jeffrey goes back to the beginning, to those fraught college years at Yale and to her, to make sense of what happened — only to discover that what most needs making sense of is himself. By turns smart, funny, and heart-wrenching, Bright College Years tracks Jeff and an ensemble cast as they navigate the shortest, gladdest, most complex years of life — and then the rest of it. Coming of age doesn’t only happen to the young. Andrew is a philosophy professor and author of four novels. He was pre-med at Yale but promptly changed his mind during a medical school interview upon being confronted with a cadaver, and bolted the opposite direction into philosophy where there are far fewer cadavers. He is also an accomplished songwriter who, if he could sing better, might have become a musician (and is perpetually seeking talented artists who are looking for material to cover). He always treasured his Yale experience and friends, but didn’t realize just how much it all meant to him until he wrote this book. We will gather virtually via Zoom on Sunday June 9th at 2:00pm to watch a video about Birthday Wishes, get instructions on how to build a Birthday in a Box, and then build our boxes together from the comfort of our own home. **NOTE: This project involves some upfront shopping on your part.** Please be sure to review the instructions and buy items from the shopping list before June 9th: https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:US:6440a431-7db8-4051-88a0-0c5b873173f5 QC Checklist: https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:us:5a3426f0-c2d5-4b06-89e2-59479afc9749 After your box is built you can drop it off at Rob Greenly's house in Newton, MA anytime before 12noon on Mon, June 9th. Or you can join other Yalies on Monday, June 10th at 1:30pm as we drop off our boxes together at Birthday Wishes Headquarters at 24 Superior Dr, Suite B1, Natick, MA 01760 (rear loading dock). Additional information about building a Birthday-in-a-Box: Birthday Wishes’ mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness. Birthday Wishes believes that all children, regardless of their living situation, should celebrate their birthdays joyfully, surrounded by family, friends, and others who care. You can help make this happen for those children! Each Birthday-in-a-Box will be delivered to a homeless child and their family unit (up to 6-8 people) while they are staying at a homeless shelter. When building Birthdays-in-a-Box, please make sure of the following: 1. Correct boxes are used (15” x 12” x 10 banker box or copy paper box with detached lid) 2. Boxes are neatly wrapped (please see our website to watch our instructional wrapping video click here). Younger children will need assistance from adults. 3. Please make sure all the party supplies in each individual box are of the same theme and coordinate. 4. All party supplies must be in unopened original packaging. Please no loose items. 5. Birthday-in-a-Box themes should be appropriate for children ages 2-13. We are currently in need of the following themes: Disney Princess, Unicorn, Minnie Mouse, Rainbow, Space, Star Wars, Video Gaming, Lego, Marvel, DCU, Construction, Monster Trucks, Paw Patrol and Generic Birthday Themes for kids of all ages. 6. Only add items listed on our Checklist. 7. Make sure that the cake mix and frosting’s expiration dates are at least 8 months beyond the date of your drop-off. 8. Birthday Wishes will add three carefully chosen gifts to each Birthday-in-a-Box before we deliver it to the child. 9.
