Don't be fooled. This is no ordinary book club.

Free Minds connects incarcerated youth and adults with their communities through poetry. Volunteers, alongside Free Minds Poet Ambassadors, come together to provide uplifting (written) feedback on the poetry of currently incarcerated members, which is then returned to the poet.

All you need is a computer or tablet and an internet connection. Free Minds staff and Poet Ambassadors will provide an introduction to the organization and virtual platform.

This event is hosted by Yale Day of Service and Yale Alumni Service Corps in partnership with Free Minds Book Club.

Art is an important form of communication and an integral part of every student's education. Most children start out as visual communicators, which makes art one of their first opportunities to make their mark on the world. Art also creates social connections and allows children to communicate in powerful ways.

Join us for this insightful conversation on the transformative power of the arts for children.

Our speakers from the Children's Museum of the Arts (CMANY) will discuss concepts for delivering virtual arts programming and education to children during the pandemic. Our speakers from Yale Alumni Service Corps (YASC) will complement the discussion by providing commentary on the impact of the childrens' arts programming organized during YASC trips.

Founded in 1988 and located in the Manhattan neighborhood of SoHo, CMANY unites children and artists to create and share ambitious artwork with their communities and the world.

Since 2018, YPEI has offered credited Yale courses to incarcerated students in Connecticut state prisons. YPEI course offerings, which are drawn from existing Yale College classes, recreate the rigor and diversity of liberal arts classes available to on-campus Yale undergraduates. Through Campus partnerships, YPEI also connects incarcerated students to Yale resources to ensure their academic success and likewise fosters relationships with community partners to support students returning home from prison. YPEI advocates for these causes on- and off-campus and brings together Yale and the broader New Haven community around these issues. This event is part of the GLC@lunch online lecture series. false

Blight about her new book "South to Freedom: Runaway Slaves to Mexico and the Road to Civil War" (Basic Books 2020). Thousands of people in the south-central United States escaped slavery not by heading north but by crossing the southern border into Mexico. In South to Freedom, historian Alice L. Baumgartner tells the story of why Mexico abolished slavery in 1837 and how its increasingly radical antislavery policies fueled the sectional crisis in the United States. Southerners hoped that annexing Texas and invading Mexico in the 1840s would stop runaways and secure slavery’s future. Instead, the seizure of Alta California and Nuevo México upset the delicate political balance between free and slave states. This is a revelatory and essential new perspective on antebellum America and the causes of the Civil War. "South to Freedom reorders the way we should think and teach about the slavery expansion crisis in the middle of the nineteenth century. Indeed, it reorders how to think about the huge question of the coming of the American Civil War. Not many books these days can make that claim. With astonishing research and graceful writing, this one can."—David W. Blight, Pulitzer Prize-winning author of Frederick Douglass: Prophet of Freedom false

Join us for this insightful conversation with our friends from Instituto Nueva Escuela (INE) who will give us an update on the community of Residencial Luis Llorens Torres in San Juan, the largest housing project in Puerto Rico and the Caribbean, with almost 3,000 people, provide the latest information regarding Covid and education, the status of vaccinations in Puerto Rico, and discuss remote volunteer opportunities for Yale alumni, family, and friends. Our speakers from YASC will provide commentary on the impact of the robust and ongoing public health project in the community. We will also discuss plans for a return trip in March 2022.

The inaugural YASC Service Trip to Puerto Rico took place one year ago in the community of Residencial Luis Llorens Torres. Working alongside INE, a nonprofit organization whose mission is bringing Montessori education to public schools and supporting the families of enrolled students, our group of 50+ Yale volunteers, led by Elena Labrada '86, conducted a number of projects in two schools (pre K-6 and 7-9 grades).

Projects included organizing group sports and games for fun and exercise; building sun shades and bookshelves; teaching science offerings including bees and botany, environmental science, and computer coding with robots; planning a newsletter and performance art classes; photography and media; and addressing public health needs in understanding emotions and developing empathy, self-control, and conflict resolution; and habits for healthy living.
