Lydia Cristobal ’16 DNP currently manages two transitional care units in CarePoint Health hospitals as an administrator. A veteran of Operation Enduring Freedom, Cristobal continues to serve in the U.S. Army Reserve as a major and case manager for the 7245th Medical Support Unit in Picatinny Arsenal, New Jersey. While living in Texas, she initiated the Yale Veterans Association (YVA) Houston Chapter, and she currently is regional chapter development chair for the YVA in New Jersey, a YVA board member, and YAA Board of Governors member.

Lydia will share her struggle keeping a work-life balance in civilian and military life. From her perspective as a Yale alum and Army veteran, she speaks to endurance and resilience after going through struggles with divorce, death in the family, financial hardships, and other life challenges. Lydia represents a less recognized but much valued contingent of students and alumni, and this session will offer a space in which her experience provides lessons learned. Lydia will lead discussion in which attendees can be open about their own stories.

With Yale degrees in psychology and healthcare management, Nya Holder ’17, ’18 MPH is a life coach who supports her clients in designing a life that fuels them and their bank accounts. She believes that when we take control of our energy and how it flows throughout the day, we become unstoppable. She is a life and business coach inspiring individuals and organizations to live on purpose. Nya’s name actually means purpose, and she is here to help you realign with what’s most important in life — your joy, your passion, your ease.

Joy is defined as a feeling of great pleasure and happiness. The reality is that we often block our joy. During this discussion, we'll explore how to prioritize feeling good and develop practices to experience consistent, effortless joy.

Charles Eisenstein '89 is a teacher, speaker, and writer focusing on themes of civilization, consciousness, money, and human cultural evolution. Graduating from Yale with a degree in Mathematics and Philosophy, he didn’t pursue a typical path to career success. Asking himself “What is the origin of the wrongness in the world?” resulted in his  writing The Ascent of Humanity, which initiated a re-ordering of his own world. He would go on to author Sacred Economics, The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible, and Climate — A New Story, as well as numerous essays. A guest in the Careers, Life, and Yale series in January, this summer session will allow for more discussion among Charles and attendees.

Involved in the Occupy, New Economy, and permaculture movements, Charles’ work centers on anti-consumerism, interdependence, and how myth and narrative influence culture, with one of his main goals being an alternative “story of interbeing.” In addition to his free podcasts, Charles is a frequent speaker at conferences and workshops. When interviewed by Oprah for her Super Soul Sunday program, he suggested, “Like you might have every mental reason to try really hard to ‘make it,’ to be a success, to get good grades, to get a good job, to play the game of life as its been offered to us, but there’s a rebellion, I think, it’s a mutiny of the soul…”

What would happen if you realized that you aren’t actually doing what you love? How would you transition into a truly meaningful life? What does it really mean to use your gifts to change the world?

Welcome to another season of regular Thursday programming featuring Yalies organized by the Careers, Life and Yale committee of the Yale Alumni Association Board of Governors. This 2021-2022 season, the weekly offerings will also highlight current students from Yale College and the graduate and professional schools. During the pandemic, we all learned how to connect virtually while social-distancing, and we will continue to make attendees as much a part of the event as the presenters.

For the first episode on September 9th, Charles Eisenstein ’89 returns for The More Beautiful World Our Hearts Know Is Possible, which is the title of his latest book in which he explores the transition society must go through to a happier, healthier, sustainable and more fulfilling future. As Yalies, we know that we have a mission to make the world a better place, but how might we create a truly meaningful life? How might we interweave personal fulfillment with the common good?

We speak of a “return to normalcy,” but Charles asks if that’s what is truly called for. Involved in the Occupy, New Economy, and permaculture movements, Charles’ work centers on anti-consumerism, interdependence, and how myth and narrative influence culture, with one of his main goals being an alternative “story of interbeing.” In this virtual session, attendees will participate in breakout rooms in addition to discussion in the main gallery.

Ever wonder what it’s like to be a professional problem solver? Join Careers, Life, and Yale for a discussion with three Yale graduates, learning about their varied career journeys in information technology and strategic management consulting. What are the different ways to get into the field? What are critical success factors and the unique rewards and challenges of the profession? What is it like starting your own consulting practice? Discuss these questions and more with Russell Ahrens ’96, Folake Fadayomi ’18 MBA, and Daniel Yim ’18 MBA. This event is co-sponsored by the Yale Club of Washington, DC.
