We have a fun and meaningful afternoon planned. We will be helping "strip" bikes (i.e., taking all the parts off a bike), sorting parts, and "flattening" bikes (i.e., turning the handle bars sideways for shipping). All skill-levels and ages are welcome! Youth are welcome if accompanied by an adult and can be attentive to instructions. Please wear closed-toed footwear and try to wear clothes that can get dirty. Note: we will be volunteering at the Jamaica Plain warehouse this year, not the Dorchester one. Bikes Not Bombs (Jamaica Plain) — 284 Amory Street true

Add to Calendar 2026-05-15T00:00:00 2026-05-15T00:00:00 America/New_York Yale Day of Service: MA, Boston - More Than Words Youth Program The Organization: More Than Words (MTW) sells books to change lives. This vital organization works with the most vulnerable young adults in Greater Boston: those who are in the foster care system, court involved, unhoused, out of school, parenting, or involved with the Department of Mental Health. At More Than Words they earn a paying job, learning job skills while receiving focused support to ensure they persist in school and map plans for their future work, education, and life. Learn more about their model and impact here: https://shop.mtwyouth.org/pages/model-impact. Planned activities: During our volunteer shift we will help youth on their business job. The activities vary, but may include organizing shelves, picking orders, sorting donations, and more. We may work as a big group or be divided up into smaller teams for different tasks. Our team will see that they have accomplished a lot to help our youth hit their goals! Learn more about what to expect here: https://shop.mtwyouth.org/pages/volunteering#groups If you have gently-loved books that you would like to donate to the organization, feel free to bring them. Scroll down this page to find more information about the types of books they accept: https://shop.mtwyouth.org/pages/donate-books-and-clothes Please plan to arrive early if you would like to make a donation of books. And feel free to arrive early/stay after to do some shopping. It’s a really fantastic book and thrift store! Group size and age limitation: The Boston MTW site can accommodate a group of 15 volunteers. Teens 15 and older may join an all adult group with a caregiver present. Volunteer slots will be allocated on a “first come, first served” basis and a waitlist will be kept. The site coordinator will inform you of your status within 48 hours after signing up. Attendance expectations: This YDOS volunteer project runs from 10:30am–12:30pm on a weekday. It is important that everyone arrive on time so plan extra time for public transportation delays, traffic, and to find parking. If you cannot be on site at MTW Boston for the 10:30am start, please consider signing up for another YDOS volunteer project. If for any reason, you sign up and are unable to attend, please contact Elisabeth Nevins, the site coordinator, as soon as possible so that your space can be offered to someone on the waitlist. Preparation: Please wear comfortable shoes and clothing as we likely will be working in the MTW book warehouse. Bring water and/or a snack as needed. Parking: Two parking lots are available under the 93 overpass off Albany Street and are within a two-minute walk of MTW. Both lots are $2.50 per hour. Metered street parking is also available on Harrison Avenue but is limited to 2 hours per block. Please do not park in the rear of the building. Public transportation (MBTA): Silver Line bus (SL4 or SL5) Service from South Station to East Berkeley St (3-minute walk). Red Line train to the Broadway stop then walk to East Berkeley St (10-minute walk). Orange Line train to the Tufts Medical center stop then walk to East Berkeley St (10-minute walk). Orange Line train to the Back Bay stop then walk to East Berkeley St (20-minute walk). More Than Words, Boston Store — 242 East Berkeley Street true

We will virtually create "Birthdays in a Box" for homeless kids to experience a real birthday celebration. We will wrap a medium box with festive wrapping and fill it with items that will enable the homeless child to celebrate his/her/their birthday with other children in their homeless shelter. You and your family will be creating birthday joy to a child currently experiencing the trauma of homelessness. We will gather virtually via Zoom on Sunday May 17 at 1:00pm to watch a video about Birthday Wishes, get instructions on how to build a Birthday in a Box, and then build our boxes together from the comfort of our own home. We will drop off boxes at Birthday Wishes on Tues May 19 at 2pm or you can drop off your completed boxes before May 19 at 12noon in Newton for Rob Greenly to deliver to Birthday Wishes. **This project involves some upfront shopping on your part.** Please be sure to review the instructions and buy items from the shopping list before May 17: https://drive.google.com/file/d/1UCv0qG022v_VR-1yuhBQ5lGBCbG4DkaJ/view?usp=drive_link QC Checklist: https://acrobat.adobe.com/id/urn:aaid:sc:us:5a3426f0-c2d5-4b06-89e2-59479afc9749 Birthday Wishes’ mission is to provide birthday parties to children experiencing homelessness.
