For a few hours, a corner of Central Park felt unmistakably Yale. Under the leafy canopy of the East Pinetum, alumni from across the decades reconnected with classmates, welcomed new friends into their circles, and celebrated a community whose influence extends far beyond graduation.
More than 200 alumni, family members, and friends gathered at Central Park's East Pinetum on June 6 for the annual Yale NYC Summer Picnic. The afternoon brought together Yalies from across class years, graduate and professional schools, shared-interest groups, and regional clubs, including many alumni visiting New York City for the Yale College Classes of the 2000’s mini-reunion. Against the backdrop of a sizzling early-summer day, attendees spent the afternoon reconnecting with classmates, meeting fellow alumni, and enjoying food, games, and conversation in one of the city's most iconic public spaces.
A buffet spread catered by both The Smith Restaurant and Village Square Pizza, plus other refreshments, kept attendees well-fed throughout the afternoon, while lawn games drew friendly competition, and children bounced between the picnic area and nearby playgrounds. Yet as with many Yale gatherings, the conversations became the main attraction. Alumni exchanged career insights, shared updates on families and recent adventures, reminisced about residential college traditions, and made introductions that will undoubtedly lead to future friendships and collaborations.
One of the most striking aspects of the day was the breadth of the Yale community represented. Recent graduates mingled with alumni celebrating decades since their graduation. Classmates who had traveled to New York for mini-reunion festivities found themselves meeting alumni from entirely different generations and backgrounds. By the end of the afternoon, it was difficult to find a conversation that wasn't spanning multiple class years, schools, alumni communities, or even geographies!
The picnic was co-hosted by 1stGenYale, Yale Alumni Educators, and the Yale College Class of 2008, with additional support from Camp Yale Emeritus, yale.NYC, and the Yale College Classes of 2002, 2003, 2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, and 2012. Event organizers Grace Kim ‘22 (1stGenYale and Yale Alumni Educators), Phil Clopton ‘08 (Social Chair for the Class of 2008), Bradford Galiette ’08, ’11 MBA, ’12 MS (Secretary for the Class of 2008), and Carol Yu ‘08 reprised their work together from past years’ summer picnics in organizing this year’s picnic. The event reflected the collaborative spirit that continues to strengthen Yale's alumni network, bringing together class organizations, shared interest groups, and regional leaders in support of a unified gathering open to all Yalies.
Perhaps the best measure of the day's success came as the afternoon drew to a close. Many attendees lingered well past their planned departure times, reluctant to leave conversations that had only just begun. For a few hours in Central Park, Yale's alumni community felt even a little more close-knit and a little more connected.
Reflecting on the afternoon, Phil Clopton ’08 encouraged alumni to remain engaged with the Yale community. "Regardless of which group you're a part of, keep attending and stay involved," he reminded attendees. "Events like this only happen when Yalies show up and continue to show up. That's what keeps our Yale community strong."
