    • 1956 | Class Program - Dr. Peter Conolly-Smith Lecture

      Class of ’56 programming will begin with a special lecture by Dr. Peter Conolly-Smith, a Professor of History at CUNY-Queens College. He will be introduced by Classmate and friend Marv Berenblum. This talk is designed to bring back the Yale 1950s with the outsized personalities of debaters William Sloan Coffin and William F. Buckley, Jr.

This year marks the 10th anniversary of the restoration of ROTC back on campus!  Hear about the latest activities and developments in the Yale veteran community and our Naval ROTC and Air Force ROTC units. Learn more about the Yale Veterans Association, an alumni organization dedicated to supporting and uplifting the Yale veteran community, improving US civil-military relations, addressing salient issues facing veterans and the military, and reaffirming Yale’s highest traditions of leadership and service to the nation.

      We will wallow with Classmate Es Esselstyn as he relates the thrilling chase for the 1956 Olympic gold medal in Melbourne by the Yale crew. Es will give us the background details, the initial loss, the rare comeback, the final strokes. We will listen to the words of the Australian radio announcer in sheer disbelief of the ending. Es is one of three living members of that crew.
