Biography
Born in Trinidad and Tobago, the Rev. Dr. Danielle Ayana James immigrated to Canada with her family at the age of 12. She earned her undergraduate degree in science at McMaster University, but it was at Yale where she truly came into her own as a thinker, as a leader, and as someone committed to service rooted in values that continue to shape every part of her life.
James was a student at Yale Divinity School when September 11, 2001, changed the world. That same year, she served as the Magee Fellow at Dwight Hall, Yale’s center for public service and social justice. Working alongside students at the intersection of faith, ethics and justice, she found clarity in the call to lead with purpose, courage and care. Yale shaped her understanding that leadership is rooted in ethical engagement, strategic clarity, and civic responsibility. This foundation continues to guide her work as an ordained Protestant minister and co-founder of a consulting firm focused on strategy and leadership for purpose-driven organizations.
James has remained deeply connected to Yale. For eight years she has participated in undergraduate admissions as an alumni interviewer, and has served as a Cross Campus Alumni Mentor, supporting meaningful connections between alumni and students. She also served as a YAA Delegate and currently sits on the board of the Yale Divinity School Alumni Association.
