2020 Yale Day of Service: Digital Service in a Virtual Era

On a day that thousands of Yalies were scheduled to gather all over the world for the 12th Yale Day of Service, the concept of gathering has changed dramatically. However, the need for community building and local support are in higher demand than ever.

Join fellow alumni for a discussion of the ways in which alumni groups can form and maintain relationships with local partners, and hear from one group that did just that during remarkable circumstances in the COVID-19 crisis.

Speakers

Andrew Burgie '87

Burgie is the hazardous materials training coordinator at New York University School of Global Public Health. He is active in the Yale alumni network as a board member for yaleNYC, the Yale Alumni Nonprofit Alliance (YANA), and Yale Alumni Service Corps (YASC). As chair of the yaleNYC Public Service/Social Justice committee, he has helped coordinate public service opportunities since 2008, including the annual Day of Service site in Prospect Park, Brooklyn.

Liam Elkind ’21

Elkind is studying Ethics, Politics, and Economics at Yale. He has been involved with several organizations on campus, including the Yale College Democrats and Registration Is Student Empowerment (RISE), and served as finance director for a local city council campaign. In March, Elkind and fellow Yalie Simone Policano ’16 founded Invisible Hands, a volunteer organization in New York City that delivers groceries and supplies to high-risk communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Alison Gardy '88

Gardy is the founder of Gardy Communication Strategies, which supports social impact endeavors. She has worked at nonprofits for 20+ years, including 15+ years as director of international relations at 92Y. Alison is a board director for the Fulbright Association and YANA, where she spearheads the Yale Community Connect initiative that extends service to a year-round commitment.

Xiaoyan Huang '91

Huang is a cardiologist based in Portland, Oregon. She is a member of the YAA Board of Governors and also on the board of YASC and Careers, Life, and Yale, in addition to serving as an officer and past president of Yale Alumni Association of Oregon & Southwest Washington.
