All in the Family: A Family Perspective on Multiple YASC Trips

Join us for a robust conversation with YASC Board members Andrew Burgie ’87, Rosalia Burke ’92, and Arikha Moses ’98 PhD, as we discuss the impact of our service programs on families. As an organization that has organized 28 volunteer programs around the world, we have found our YASC programs to be life-challenging - for both the local residents and for our volunteers.

Our volunteers have made new friends and reconnected with one another and others who share a passion for service and hard work while learning and having a personally meaningful experience. For families, there is no better gift you can give your children than working with them side by side while serving an enthusiastic community in another part of the world.

Rosalia Burke '92

Rosalia Burke ’92, YASC Board member

Rosalia Burke has worked since 2003 as an otolaryngologist in The Woodlands, Texas, where she is a partner of Texas ENT Specialists. Dr. Burke also serves as the chair of the Memorial Hermann Conroe Surgery Center and is on the board of the Memorial Hermann Surgery Center-Pinecroft. Dr. Burke’s studies have taken her across the country. She graduated from Yale with a BS in biology in 1992. Dr. Burke then received an Olin Fellowship and attended the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis. She completed medical school in 1996 before moving to Seattle, where she completed an internship in general surgery followed by residency in otolaryngology/head and neck surgery at the University of Washington. She participated in past YASC trips to the Dominican Republic in 2019 and Puerto Rico in 2020 and 2023 with her family, when she led the public health project.

Arikha Moses 1.5.22

Arikha Moses ’98 PhD, YASC Board member

Arikha Moses is a medical device executive and investor. She founded and led TyRx (now Medtronic Infection Control) and Galatea Surgical (now part of Beckton Dickinson) through clinical and commercial successes. These businesses developed and commercialized implantable surgical products that have provided safer and more effective surgical outcomes for millions of patients worldwide. Arikha has a BA in Chemistry from Brandeis University and a PhD in Bioorganic Chemistry from Yale. She serves on the YAA Board of Governors, as a Yale Alumni Service Corps Board member and a Yale Day of Service Regional Co-Director for NYC. She has been on YASC trips to South Africa, Ghana, and India with her husband and children, and credits YASC trips with inspiring her daughter to develop a passion for public service.

Andrew Burgie '87

Andrew Burgie ’87, YASC Chair

Andrew Burgie teaches Global Environmental Health as an assistant adjunct professor in the New York University School of Global Public Health. He also serves as an industrial hygienist and assistant research scientist who manages the NIEHS Worker Training Program Grant that administers Hazardous Waste Worker Training for various New York-based groups as part of the Atlantic Center for Occupational Health and Safety Training Consortium run by Rutgers School of Public Health. As former Co-Director of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at the CUNY School of Public Health, he specializes in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training for both City and State agencies as well as private organizations. Andrew was the producer for the YASC program in Puerto Rico 2023. He is the Chair of the YASC Board having been on ten trips.
