“The Human Experience” has featured Yalies who are giving a contemporary spin to practices and traditions that stretch back in time. Artist Shawn Cheng ’02 creates worlds with mythic stories and imagery, including yokai , a class of supernatural monsters and spirits from Japanese folklore. Growing up in Taiwan and Long Island, his influences range from manga to Calvin and Hobbes. Rather than illustrating, Shawn makes up his own stories with his colorful pictures redolent of 19th-century woodblock prints, often placing the figures in modern setting.
