COVID-19 Lessons Learned from China: Disease Management, Clinical Research and Health Policy

Professor Wenhong Zhang is the Director of the Center for Infectious Disease at Huashan Hospital of Fudan University, the Chair of the Department of Internal Medicine at Fudan, and a principle investigator of Institute of Biomedical Science at Fudan. He received his M.D. and Ph.D. at Shanghai Medical University and was a post-doctoral fellow and visiting scholar at the Department of Microbiology at the University of Hong Kong, Harvard Medical School, and Illinois State University at Chicago. Dr. Zhang’s has extensive experience with the diagnosis and treatment of various emerging infectious diseases and his research has focused on infectious diseases, including mycobacterium tuberculosis, SARS and COVID-19. He has published more than 50 peer-reviewed articles and reviews on journals including Clinical Infectious Diseases, Emerging Infectious Diseases, AIDS and PLoS One. He is currently serving as the Leader of Shanghai’s Anti-COVID-19 Clinical Expert Team and plays a leadership role in COVID-19 management and public education in China.

Professor Sten H. Vermund is the Dean and Anna M.R. Lauder Professor of Public Health, Professor of Pediatrics at the Yale School of Medicine. Dean Vermund received his BA from Stanford, MD from Albert Einstein College of Medicine, his master’s and doctorate degrees from the Royal Institute of Public Health and Hygiene, London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine as well as Columbia University. A pediatrician and infectious disease epidemiologist, Dean Vermund’s research focused on diseases of low and middle income countries, especially around HIV surveillance and cervical cancer screening. Dean Vermund's research has focused on health care access, adolescent sexual and reproductive health, and prevention of mother-to-child HIV transmission.

Kevin Ye ’04 MBA is the CEO of Salubris Pharmaceuticals, a leading pharmaceuticals company in China. He started as assistant general manager in charge of distribution network in 2004 and was named CEO in 2007. Kevin took the company public in 2009 in China’s Shenzhen Stock Exchange. Prior to Salubris, Kevin was a business planning manager for HP in Cupertino, California. Kevin currently serves on the Board of Directors at Renmin University. He is also a member of Yale Asia Development Council, Yale School of Management Greater China Advisory Board. Kevin is the inaugural President of Yale Club of Shenzhen, Yale Healthcare Club of China. He received his BBA from the University of Michigan Business School and MBA from Yale School of Management.

Dr. Xiaoyan Huang MD, MHCM, FACC '91 is a cardiologist and Medical Director of General Cardiology at Providence Heart Clinic in Portland, Oregon. She is the immediate-past President of Medical Staff at Providence Milwaukie Hospital. She serves on the Chinese American Heart Association Board. Dr. Huang graduated from Yale College and Stanford Medical School. She completed her Internal Medical Residency and Cardiology Fellowship training at Oregon Health & Sciences University and holds a Master’s degree in Health Care Management from the Harvard T. H. Chan School of Public Health. In addition to her clinical practice, Dr. Huang’s research focus has been around specialty practice improvement, payment reform, health policy and economics. She has published on these topics in the New England Journal of Medicine, Circulation, Harvard Business Review, New England Journal of Medicine Catalyst, etc. Dr. Huang is the immediate past President of Yale Club of Oregon and SW Washington and  currently serves as an Executive Officer on the Yale Alumni Board of Governors.
