Webinar: Women, Men, and Food

Prof. Paul Freedman will talk about Women, Men, and Food, an excerpt from his upcoming book: "American Cuisine and How It Got This Way." During this one-hour, free webinar, Prof. Freedman will discuss the perceptions of men and women's food preferences in the 20th century. He will also discuss how new products such as Jell-O and magazines such as Good Housekeeping and Gourmet alternately reinforced and upended prevailing stereotypes around food and gender.

Speaker Profiles

Professor Paul Freedman

Chester D. Tripp Professor of History, Yale University

Professor Freedman specializes in medieval social history, the history of Catalonia, comparative studies of the peasantry, trade in luxury products, and the history of cuisine. He is the author of "Ten Restaurants That Changed America" (Liveright/Norton, 2016). His upcoming book is "American Cuisine and How It Got This Way."

Freedman edited "Food: The History of Taste", an illustrated collection of essays about food from prehistoric to contemporary times published by Thames & Hudson (London) and in the US by the University of California Press (2007). His book on the demand for spices in medieval Europe was published in 2008 by Yale University Press. It is entitled "Out of the East: Spices and the Medieval Imagination." Freedman also co-edited three other collections: with Caroline Walker Bynum, "Last Things: Death and the Apocalypse in the Middle Ages" (1999) with Monique Bourin, "Forms of Servitude in Northern and Central Europe" (2005), and with Ken Albala and Joyce Chaplin, "Food in Time and Place" (2014).

Wendy Maldonado D'Amico ‘93 is a freelance consultant with expertise in marketing, communications, and project management. Her experience spans both the private and non-profit sector, and she has worked in fields as diverse as management consulting, technology, investment banking, consumer products, economic development, and higher education. Past clients include Yale University, The Boston Consulting Group, SAP, MBI Inc., and the Brazelton Touchpoints Center at Boston Children's Hospital. She holds a B.A. in English Literature from Yale University, a Master in Public Administration from the John F. Kennedy School of Government at Harvard University, and an M.B.A. from the MIT Sloan School of Management. She serves as a member of the Board of Governors of the Yale Alumni Association (YAA). She manages and curates the Yale Food + Beverage Group on Facebook.
