Yale Career Panels: A Candid View of Venture Capital and Private Equity

This event is the 52nd in a series covering different professions and career issues. There have been 42 Yale Career Panels and nine Yale Career Fireside Chats.

Organized nine years ago by a group of Yale alumni volunteers, these panels strive to provide candid, unvarnished views of featured professions. Our panelists for this event are in venture capital and private equity. They will be able to share their perspectives about each profession and also provide the audience with a comparison.

The panel discussion will be broadcast via an interactive streaming video platform that will allow Yale students and alumni to ask questions of the panel and interact with each other. There will be a networking period after the one-hour panel has ended.

In 2016, we started a series called, “Yale Career Fireside Chats.” This series spotlights issues and opportunities which may be encountered during your professional career. So far, our 9 fireside chats have covered “Diversity, Equity and Inclusion,” “Managing Major Career Changes,” “Serving on Boards,” “The Art of Networking,” “Cybersecurity”, “ Managing Your Career in a Covid-19 Downturn,” Lessons from Kevin Ryan, a Veteran Entrepreneur,” “How has the Pandemic Impacted our Careers and Work-Life?,” and “How to Ace Your Interviews.”

Panelists

Elizabeth Broomfield

Elizabeth is a vice president at Stonecourt Capital. Ms. Broomfield was previously an investor at the Carlyle Group in their flagship U.S. buyout fund and with Hg Capital investing in growth and buyout deals. She has also worked in venture capital at Bessemer Venture Partners and investment banking at Morgan Stanley. Elizabeth graduated with distinction from Yale with a double major in Electrical Engineering and Ethics, Politics, and Economics; earned a masters from the London School of Economics; and received her JD/MBA from Columbia, where she graduated with highest honors as a Kent Scholar and with Dean’s Honors.

Michael Inwald

Michael is the managing director of Crocker Mountain Capital, a Boston-based, single-family office investing across asset classes with a focus on venture capital and lower middle market buyout. Prior to Crocker Mountain, Michael was the founder and CEO of Cheeseboy Restaurants, a multi-unit restaurant chain that he sold in 2016.

Michael previously served as an active board member of the Yale Entrepreneurial Institute (now Tsai CITY) and has lectured frequently on venture development, with a focus on finance, fundraising, team-building, human resource management, and culture development. Michael is a proud supporter and board committee member of Paul Newman's SeriousFun Children's Network. He holds a BA from Cornell University and an MBA from the Yale School of Management.

James Kim

James is a partner at Reach Capital, an early stage venture capital firm that supports entrepreneurs developing technology solutions for the future of learning and work. He serves as a board director or observer for Paper, Polygence, FourthRev, Hopps, and Riipen, and actively supports Crash, Major League Hacking, and Sketchy Medical. Previously, James served as a Yale admissions officer, nonprofit executive, and high school math teacher. He earned an MBA from the Stanford Graduate School of Business, where he was an Arjay Miller Scholar; an MA in education from the Stanford Graduate School of Education; and a BS cum laude in Astrophysics from Yale . In his spare time, he enjoys powerlifting, CrossFit, escape rooms, and social deduction games (like Avalon and Secret Hitler).

Moderator and Organizer

Julie Sohn

Julie recently received her MBA from the University of Michigan – Ross School of Business and is now an associate at McKinsey in New York. Prior to getting her MBA, she spent five years in the insurance industry in various capacities, including internal consulting, post-merger transformation, and advanced analytics. She is passionate about driving impactful change in corporations and is dedicated to advancing women in the workplace. Julie is originally from Seoul, South Korea, and holds a BA from Yale.
