YaleWomen recently hosted an inspiring conversation with Ellen McGinnis ’82, a founding force behind YaleWomen and the organization’s first Chair. In a candid interview led by Jen Jamula ’05 of GoldJam Creative, Ellen shared her reflections on leadership, the realities of work-life balance, and what it meant to help launch and grow one of Yale’s most engaged alumni communities.
For those unfamiliar, YaleWomen was established in 2011 to connect Yale alumnae through shared identity and purpose. It is now a thriving, volunteer-run network open to all women who have completed at least one semester at Yale College or one of Yale’s graduate or professional schools. Its mission—"Connecting women, igniting ideas, and transforming the world"—remains central to its programming and community-building efforts.
Ellen shared how her path as a Yale alum and partner at the law firm Haynes Boone intersected with her deep commitment to service and the Yale community. From holding early listening sessions across the country to co-leading the creation of YaleWomen’s first strategic plan, she recalled the energy, talent, and sense of purpose that shaped the organization’s beginnings.
The conversation touched on how Ellen navigated nearly a decade of volunteer leadership while raising a family and managing a demanding legal career. Her secret? Clear communication, effective delegation, and what she calls “the superpower of managing expectations.” She credited a strong support system at home and at work, and reminded listeners that making space for family and purpose-driven work doesn’t diminish professional ambition.
Ellen also reflected on the joy of seeing YaleWomen evolve. “Each year,” she said, “new women join the Council, fresh voices lead, and new ideas take shape. That kind of renewal is one of YaleWomen’s greatest strengths.”
Now, as the organization approaches its 15th anniversary, Ellen has re-engaged to offer guidance and professional support, helping ensure that the group’s early vision continues to thrive and adapt. “I’m proud of what we built, and I’m excited to see how today’s leaders are shaping YaleWomen’s next chapter.”
