Biography

Elaine Gustafson received her MSN from Yale School of Nursing (YSN) specializing in pediatrics. Following her graduation, she moved to Hong Kong where she volunteered at a refugee camp and worked as a health lecturer in the region. She then moved to the UK and was active in research at Oxford, England. Upon returning to the US she began a clinical practice in New Haven and joined the faculty of YSN where she participated in research on childhood obesity rose to rank of Associate Professor. Since retirement, her interest in global and international health issues remain strong.

Gustafson has rencently done numerous volunteer trips to Nicaragua with both the Yale Alumni Service Corps and Yale School of Nursing. Gustafson recently completed a two year term as the first woman President of the Yale Club of the Suncoast – in Sarasota, Florida. She worked with the Club’s board to strengthen its programs, expand Yale Day of Service options, and develop a new website. Prior to becoming president, she served many years on the Club’s board as newsletter editor, program committee chair, Alumni Schools Committee interviewer, vice president and YAA delegate.

Gustafson divides her time between Sarasota, New Haven and Woodstock, Vermont. In Florida she volunteers with special needs children at Easter Seals of Southwest Florida where she also serves on the Advisory Board. She is active with and supports numerous other non-profit and cultural organizations in both Florida and Vermont. She is currently active on numerous committees as a member of the YAA Board of Governors.
