Biography
Joe English was raised on an old farm in a small town. There was a lot to love about his hometown, but like in many rural communities, education was viewed as a means to an end — a diploma, a job, a way out.
Upon arriving at Yale and finding himself immersed in an incredibly diverse community of talented minds, English began to appreciate and prioritize intellectual pursuits. He started to understand that reading could be exciting, an excellent paper rewarding, office hours enlightening. Yale gave him the opportunity to nurture a genuine curiosity about the world, and a sense of purpose. During his student years he had the privilege of serving on the Yale College Council, including one year as its president.
When English thinks about his time at Yale, he feels overwhelming gratitude. As an alum, he wants to give back in any way he can, but especially in ways that help engage more students (prospective, current, and former) from rural backgrounds like his.
