Yale University is committed to preserving the privacy of alumni and other affiliates (such as post-doctoral fellows) of the University.
The Yale Online Alumni Community (YOAC) has password-protected, secure areas and services that enable alumni and affiliates of the University to connect with each other. Such services include the Online Alumni Directory, the “YaleMail” Gmail service for alumni, and My Profile for updating and submitting contact and other information. Additional services offered in the future will also fall under this policy.
The Online Alumni Directory promotes finding and connecting with other Yale alumni and affiliates, yet offers the ability for individuals to suppress publication of their data on a field-by-field basis, or to suppress their profile in general.
Yale does not view or access any content from your YaleMail account unless explicitly requested to do so by the account owner to provide technical assistance, or when required to meet legal or preservation obligations, including, without limitation, in response to subpoenas or other judicial or administrative orders.
YaleMail, powered by Google Apps for Education, provides strong security and privacy protections. Google has provided contractual guarantees that allow users the ability to use YaleMail services with the appropriate privacy protections. Google is contractually obligated to protect your confidential information and not to release it to other parties, unless required by law. In order to provide essential core features for YaleMail, Google runs automated scanning and indexing processes to offer spam filtering, anti-virus protection and malware detection. Their systems also scan content to make sure Google Apps for Education services work better for users, enabling functionality like search in Gmail or Google Docs.
