YASC in Brazil 2025

Join us for a conversation with Andrew Burgie ’87 from YASC and Paulo Sanjines Barreiro ’12 MESc, to learn more about YASC's plans in Brazil. During this session, you will hear about YASC and our commitment to sustainable service as we embark on our third service trip to the community of Serra Grande in Bahia, Brazil in March 2025.

Working alongside Paulo, our YASC Project Coordinator, we will discuss potential projects, group size, trip dates, registration, timing, and other details. These projects will build on the work of two previous YASC trips to Serra Grande in 2016 and 2017, as well as virtual engagement since then. Andrew will moderate the discussion and the event will be recorded.

Paulo Barreiro Sanjines ’12 MESc

Paulo Sanjines Barreiro ’12 MESc

Paulo Sanjines Barreiro is the founder of Cachoeira, an innovative socio-environmental enterprise focused on research and education, that aims to promote cultural and technological exchange between local communities, students, researchers, and decision makers. He graduated in 2012 with a Masters in Science from Yale´s Forestry School. Since then, he has lived and worked in the Serra Grande region of Southern Bahia. Paulo has managed and monitored large protected areas in Bolivia, coordinated and monitored ecosystem conservation projects in Southern Bahia, and co-coordinated two past YASC trips to Southern Bahia in 2016 and 2017 with YASC, Instituto Floresta Viva and the local municipality. Currently he is focusing on developing Cachoeira and collaborating with the Neighbor's Association of Bairro Novo, a marginal neighborhood of Bairro Novo in various strategic areas towards sustainability and self-governance.

Andrew Burgie ’87

Andrew Burgie teaches Global Environmental Health as an assistant adjunct professor in the New York University School of Global Public Health. He also serves as an industrial hygienist and assistant research scientist who manages the NIEHS Worker Training Program Grant that administers Hazardous Waste Worker Training for various New York-based groups as part of the Atlantic Center for Occupational Health and Safety Training Consortium run by Rutgers School of Public Health. As former Co-Director of the Center for Occupational and Environmental Health at the CUNY School of Public Health, he specializes in Hazardous Waste Operations and Emergency Response training for both City and State agencies as well as private organizations. Trained as an industrial hygienist with an M.S. in Environmental and Occupational Health Science from Hunter College CUNY, he has also conducted numerous indoor air quality inspections, lead-based paint assessments, and general environmental health investigations for commercial and residential properties for various consulting firms over the years. Andrew Burgie was the producer for the YASC program in Puerto Rico 2023. He is the Chair of the YASC Board having been on ten trips.
