      We reprise our 2020 and 2021 Yale CLE Virtual Day of Service project contributing letters of love to the elderly in need of uplift and encouragement.  In 2020, we helped set a record for the nonprofit started by Jacob Cramer, '22 (Ben Franklin) -- 14,234 letters of love sent to 233 senior communities in the United States, UK, Australia and Canada. The Cleveland effort sparked national and international interest. See some of the photos of appreciative recipients, letter writers and helpers at the project's Instagram account.

      This virtual project is again part of our Yale CLE Day of Service, now marking its 14th year. So, take a moment anytime in the month of May to handwrite 14 more letters of love, warmth and encouragement (large, legible writing please!), keeping away from religion, politics and personal topics, illustrate with colorful art, if you care to do so, and mail with their envelopes to

      Meals that Heal at the Journey Center for Safety and Healing, a Cleveland nonprofit that provides safety and healing to those impacted by domestic violence and child abuse.

      On Sunday, May 1, we will be providing an Italian-themed dinner for shelter residents. We need volunteers to prepare several items for the meal. The list below reflects items still needed as well as those people have already volunteered to provide. Volunteers are welcome to sign up for more than one item if they wish.

      If you wish to make monetary donations, Michelle and Sarah Liska can deliver them to Journey Center when they deliver dinner. Journey Center also accepts online donations. No donation is required to participate in the meal preparation. Thank you for considering this very worthy cause!

      The Hustle for HealthSource Color 5k and Wellness Festival will raise awareness and charitable funds for the The HealthSource Foundation.  The Foundation provides food assistance, gas cards, discounts for prescriptions, and other support to address health disparity needs in the community it serves.  Healthsource of Ohio is a federally qualified health center (FQHC) that provides health and dental care for the underserved areas beyond the eastern side of Cincinnati.

      Volunteers have two options for participation:

      Option one: volunteer at water station and clean up afterward

      Option two: register to run in the 5k   $35 for adults, $25 for children; Save $5 using code hsocares. Once all our Yalies register for the walk/ run, HealthSource will put us into one Yale team.

      We will be volunteering Saturday morning, May 7, from 9 a.m. to noon at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank, followed by lunch at Muldoon's Saloon, 1020 E. 185th Street. 

      Please register first through this website for the event, then you must also register through the food bank by following the below instructions, which include a special link for our group.

      Please wear closed-toe and closed-heel shoes. If this is your first time volunteering at the Food Bank, you will be asked to register as a volunteer as part of the project registration process through the Food Bank and to view a brief orientation film.

      Please follow these instructions to register at the Food Bank for our event:

      Ursuline Piazza directly addresses gaps in service for the HIV-positive community, targeting vulnerable populations living with HIV/AIDS. Many clients who are aging with HIV receive food stamps but cannot afford personal hygiene and paper products.

      Yale Day of Service volunteers are invited to donate items from the list below. Items can be dropped off between 9am and 1pm and volunteers can stay to help assemble the donation bags. 

      Alumni can enter the gates of the St. Augustine Medical Campus (7801 Detroit Avenue, 44102) by identifying the "Sister Susan" event and park within the facility. Directions to a room on the main floor will be posted at the entrance to the facility.

      We will be assisting the Northern Ohio Red Cross with their Sound the Alarm campaign, part of an effort to install free smoke alarms in at-risk communities across the country. No training is needed. We will assemble at the Estabrook Rec Center in Cleveland's Old Brooklyn neighborhood and will be assigned to small 2- and 3-person teams, ideally as a Yale alum group or groups.

      Masks can be worn and must be worn if households ask, and will be provided if you don't bring one.

      Home fires claim seven lives every day, but you can help change that. Join other Yale alums for a local Sound the Alarm event in Cleveland's Edgewater neighborhood, sponsored by the American Red Cross of Northern Ohio, in partnership with the Cleveland Fire Department, to visit homes close to the Louisa May Alcott Elementary School to educate residents on fire safety and install smoke detectors where needed.

      Parking should be available at the school at 10308 Baltic Road, between W. 103rd and W. 104th Streets, where teams will gather prior to the event start at 9:30 a.m.

      No prior experience is necessary; the Red Cross and its Fire Department partners will provide all the training needed. Young people age 13-17 are welcome to participate with parental/guardian consent, but those age 13, 14 or 15 will also need the parent or guardian to be with them at the event.

      This event will be held rain or shine on Saturday, April 22, 2023.

      We will be assisting Eddie Lagucki, chief horticulturalist at Lantern Court at Red Oak Camp, with planting bulbs, transplanting seedlings and pruning lavender bushes amid the property's historic plantings, part of Holden Forests & Gardens, the nation's 12th largest public garden. That will be followed by an educational hike.

      Notes:

      • This event will take place rain or shine, unless there is thunder or hail.
      • Children are welcome. Please be prepared to supervise anyone ages 10 or younger
      • Please refrain from bringing dogs

      Directions: When you get to Lantern Court, there is a wooden sign by the entrance that says “Lantern Court at Red Oak Camp.” Pull in there. You will see a metal gate straight ahead and a road going right towards the white gate house. The front gate will be open, Go straight through towards the estate house. Those with mobility issues can park in the turn-around in front of the estate house. Everyone else continue down the road until you reach the parking lot a few hundred feet away. We will meet in the arcade to start the program, located just past the turn-around for the estate.

      For Yale CLE's traditional Day of Service project, we will be on the "repack" line Saturday, May 20, at the Greater Cleveland Food Bank's new distribution center for a fruitful, fun, and greatly needed effort to help the regional food bank meet the rising hunger needs in six Northeast Ohio counties. Chairs will be available for those who need to sit while they work.

      There is a limit of 10 for this event, so sign up soon! After registering through this Yale Day of Service event site, please also register with the Food Bank. 

      Volunteers must be 14 years or older and must wear closed-toe/closed-heel shoes.
