This is an exciting statewide event to improve and enhance New York’s parks and historic sites. Jay Heritage Center in Rye is the proud steward of the Jay Estate in Rye, a 23-acre educational center with indoor and outdoor classrooms including award-winning gardens. We are looking for volunteers of all ages to help make this local park even more beautiful and accessible. Clean trails, remove invasive species like multiflora rose vines, Oriental bittersweet, garlic mustard, Japanese Stiltgrass and more. Help plant annuals and build veggie bed trellises. Community service letters will be provided at the conclusion of your service, if needed. *Please bring gardening gloves if possible. Water and snacks will be provided. We strongly recommend long pants, long-sleeved shirts, socks, and closed-toe shoes.* We will have an ice cream truck on hand for all volunteers! A special program and book signing with forager Tama Matsuoka Wong, author of "Into the Weeds" will follow from 12-2pm for all who would like to attend. We'll be helping out at P.S. 124 (Yung Wing School) – named after the first Chinese student to graduate from an American university (Yale Class of 1854). Yale alumni families and friends of AAAYA have volunteered at this school since 2007. Activities may include organizing and cleaning out closets, as well as clearing gardens and outdoor space around the school. Plan to arrive at 8:30 for sign in and intros over coffee. We serve the community of Washington Heights/Inwood. All the mothers in our program work directly with a social worker and join a community of other mothers. Our goal after three years in our program is to transition the child to a high-quality pre-K or Head Start program. We are currently remodeling a large space for our new Distribution Center that will hold baby clothes, books, toys, diapers, and so much more. Last year with more than 1,000 attendees, we packed enough food for 20,000 meals. ROCKS THE BLOCK takes place on Sunday, May 19 from 12 to 4 pm, on 86th Street between West End Avenue and Riverside Drive. This year is particularly exciting as it will be our official 45th birthday celebration! There will be opportunities to pack food, write cards for our customers, advocate to our elected officials, and more. We are pleased to bring you live music from Emy and the Epix in addition to DJ Kreme, food and refreshments, as well as entertainment for kids of all ages. WSCAH is seeking volunteers to help us run the event. Volunteer activities will include attendee registration, lunch distribution, overseeing packing lines, and coordinating activities such as card writing, apron/tote bag decorating and birthday bag kits.
