Biography

Javade Chaudri ’75, ’77 MFSJavade Chaudhri has worldwide experience in helping private and public sector companies transact business and undertake projects in a range of industry sectors and geographies. He advises companies and state-owned enterprises on domestic and international mergers and acquisitions and strategic alliances. He also assists companies with corporate governance, compliance, and internal investigations. He has handled complex international litigation and arbitration under the rules of many major arbitral institutions. Javade has served as the head of the Jones Day’s Middle East and Africa Practice.

Javade rejoined Jones Day in 2013 after serving for 10 years as the general counsel, chief compliance officer, and chief environmental officer for Sempra Energy, a Fortune 250 company with gas and electric utilities in the United States, Mexico, and South America as well as fossil-fuel and renewable energy power plants, natural gas, and LNG businesses and a worldwide commodities and energy trading business. Prior to joining Sempra, Javade was the general counsel and corporate secretary of Gateway, a $10 billion global technology company, where he also managed the contracts department and compliance activities.

Javade has structured and negotiated infrastructure, manufacturing, technology, and other transactions in many parts of the world. He has worked on projects around the world on behalf of major multinational companies and state-owned enterprises, including on infrastructure projects, manufacturing joint ventures, healthcare and education and technology transfers. He regularly counsels companies on regulatory and compliance matters, including conducting compliance and fraud investigations. He also advises governments, development agencies, and nongovernmental organizations on transactions and large programs.

He has been involved in numerous major arbitrations relating to projects in many parts of the world, including the Middle East and Asia. These have included disputes heard under the rules or auspices of the major arbitral organizations, such as ICSID, ICC, AAA, LCIA, UNCITRAL, DIFC, and the US-Iran Claims Tribunal.

He serves on a number of nonprofit boards working on education, development, and the rule of law, including the University of California’s Global Policy & Strategy School, the Institute of the Americas, the US-Asia Institute, the San Diego Zoo Global, The Rumie Initiative, and Rule of Law for Development Program, Loyola University Chicago School of Law. Javade has served as a faculty member at many institutions in the United States and around the world and published widely.

Javade received a Bachelor of Science and Master of Environmental Science degree from Yale University and a Juris Doctor degree from Georgetown University. He has received numerous awards from various legal organizations, including the American Bar Association’s Spirit of Excellence Award, the National Asian Pacific American Association’s Trailblazer award as well as awards from other legal organizations.
