Biography
Kristina Tremonti is an Anti Corruption Analyst who has worked for the OECD’s Greece Technical Assistance Project that is committed to supporting the Greek government in implementing the National Anti Corruption Action Plan. The areas of targeted reform include strengthening integrity, fighting corruption and bribery in the Greek private sector by promoting compliance and internal control measures to create a favourable business environment conducive for investment in the crisis-struck economy . As part of this project, Kristina has been instrumental in drafting guidelines and the legislative proposal on whistleblower protection in Greece. In 2018 she was honored with the Forbes 30 Under 30 distinction in Law and Policy.
At the age of 22, after being pressured into paying a bribe at a Greek public hospital to treat her veteran grandfather who suffered from prostate cancer, Kristina founded edosafakelaki.org, a whistleblower platform that allowed citizens to report on corrupt practices that occurred in Greek public services. The website gave a voice to Greek citizens for the first time to openly discuss issues of public sector corruption that had ailed them for decades. The collected data uncovered illicit behavior in numerous hospitals, drivers schools, tax authorities and licensing services across the country and led to several investigations.
Additionally, she founded a legal pro bono clinic where lawyers could offer free legal advice to citizens who had been forced into paying bribes to public officials. The platform was recognized by the European Commission 2013 Anti Corruption Report as a citizen-led initiative to combat corruption and the data drawn from the platform contributed to the World Health Organization’s proposal to the Greek government for informal payment reform in the public health sector.
In 2015, at the age of 25, Kristina ran for a parliamentary seat in the Greek national elections. She was then appointed as an advisor to the Minister of Defense where she consulted on issues of anti-corruption, whistleblowing within the military, foreign and diaspora relations.
Kristina holds a bachelors (BA) in Political Science from Yale University and is currently completing her Masters of Science (MSc) in Computer Science and Electronic Government at Stockholm University.
