CROS Gleaning is a program of CROS Ministries, in partnership with area food banks and other food distribution agencies in Palm Beach and Martin Counties. It is a food recovery strategy that allows produce that is below top market grade or unmarketable, but equally nutritious and beneficial to be harvested and distributed to the food insecure of Palm Beach and Martin Counties instead of being plowed back into the soil.  

Volunteers will be picking produce in the field.

Please note the following:
-The gleaning will be in the Boynton Beach/Delray Beach area.  The exact location will not be known until Monday, April 25.
-Volunteers must be age 5 or older; All gleaners still in elementary, middle or high school must be accompanied by a supervising adult. This includes high school students 18 years of age or older.
-All volunteers must sign the CROS Ministries liability waiver in addition to signing the YDOS paperwork.

What to Bring and Wear:
-Bring your own water, snacks, and gloves.
-It is often good to dress in layers. In the morning, it is likely to be colder and damp, wearing a long sleeve shirt and long pants is recommended. As it gets warmer, a short sleeve shirt may be better. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip flops or open toed or heel shoes are permitted.
-It is recommended that all gleaners wear hats in the field, apply sunscreen, and have bug spray handy in case insects are an issue.
-Please bring a three to five gallon pail with a handle if possible.  It is an excellent container to carry through the field. Fill it and empty it into the packing box or bin. CROS Ministries will have some on hand for you, but it would be best if we could bring our own.

-No pets please, it is not safe for them and a violation of food safety practices.

-Bathroom facilities are unavailable in most gleaning fields. It is advisable to use the bathroom prior to coming to the field.

-If the fields are too wet because of rain, the gleaning may be canceled.

We will be cooking and serving pasta, salad, bread, and cookies to families staying at the Ronald McDonald House St. Pete East. We will be serving 50 family members. The cooking will take place in the commercial kitchen at the Ronald McDonald House.  We can have up to 10 volunteers ages 14 and above.  

Yalies who are unable to volunteer for the event on May 14 can also bake cookies and arrange with one of the organizers to drop them off before the event.

Join the Yale Club of the Palm Beaches to volunteer with the Boca Helping Hands in their "Backpacks Program" to help provide weekend meal kits to elementary school students facing food insecurity across south Palm Beach County. Please join us for this important initiative and help us give back to our local community!

• There is no minimum age, but the project is not well-suited for small children. All volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian signature on the waiver provided in the registration.
• Please wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes (e.g., sneakers).
• Parking is available in the Justin D. Webb Training Center lot across the street. 

Volunteer limit is 15 people. If you sign up and can no longer attend, please notify us in order to make space for others.

Please join us on Earth Day to build an oyster shell bar, plant native grasses, and clean up the shoreline of Lassing Park! The oyster shell project involves shoveling fossilized shell into mesh bags, transporting the bags by boat and placing them on the shoreline to create a series of oyster bars. This project is an effort to restore lost habitat systems to the bay, prevent further erosion of the shoreline, and improve water quality through natural biological filtration. Additionally, we will be planting native grasses and picking up trash from the shoreline.

We will meet at 8:30 AM at the northern end of Lassing Park. 

Parking:
On the street along Beach Dr. It will be a busy morning, so you may have to park and walk a bit to get to the meeting location.

What to Wear/Bring:
Volunteers should wear long-sleeved shirts, clothing you don't mind getting wet and dirty, closed-toe shoes or water shoes, hat.  Please bring work gloves if you have them (they will provide used work gloves if needed), sunscreen, bugspray, and a water bottle (ice water will be provided to fill up your bottle).

Second Harvest Food Bank is driven to close the gap of unmet need in Central Florida in a variety of effective ways. Their mission is to create hope and nourish lives through a powerful hunger relief network, while multiplying the generosity of a caring community. Our club will sort donated food to help make their food distribution more efficient.

Requirements:

• Minimum Age: 10+
• Close-toed and closed-heel shoes: Required for everyone
• Physical Requirements: Standing for long periods of time and lifting boxes/items
• Chaperones: 2 chaperones per 5 students

Mask Policy: Due to the prolonged and substantial drop in COVID cases and hospitalizations, Second Harvest Food Bank is happy to announce that as of Monday 5/2/22 masks will no longer be required to be worn. We recommend that you continue to exercise caution and consider social distancing around   large crowds, particularly outside the foodbank. We will continue to stay updated on any vaccination and booster info and of course you are allowed to continue to wear a mask if you so desire.

Helpful Info:

• Temperature: The warehouse temp is typically similar to the temperature outside due to the deliveries and pick-ups that occur. Ex. if it’s cooler outside, layers are recommended, warmer outside, shorts are acceptable.
• Bottled Water: Provided in the break room for all volunteers
