On Sunday, May 23, at 2:30 p.m., the Yale Club of Sacramento is inviting people from anywhere in the world to harness technology and come together online as citizen scientists to pitch in with an effort to help better forecast the effects of rising sea levels, so that coastal communities across the globe can plan and prepare. 
 
As reported recently on NPR, climate scientists have discovered a trove of data documenting sea levels off the coast of England. Beginning in the mid-1800s, workers at the Hilbre Island lifeboat rescue station, near Liverpool, recorded daily tide levels at 15-minute intervals. This data set can help scientists develop computer models of how today's rising sea levels may affect coastal communities across the globe. The challenge is that the data are collected in handwritten logs not legible to computers.
 
That’s where we come in: An organization that gathers ocean data worldwide has scanned the handwritten logs from Hilbre Island and made them publicly available through Zooniverse, a website that collects “virtual” community service projects. Through Zooniverse, we can volunteer to transcribe individual pages of these logs and help digitize their valuable data.This may not sound glamorous—and it isn’t—but it’s a chance for some socially distanced service, and we can make it fun!

Our plan is to gather interested Yalies together on Zoom so that we can meet each other, learn more about the project, and get excited for some data entry. After that meeting, we’ll disperse for an hour to help with the transcription project, then gather again briefly to celebrate what we’ve collectively been able to accomplish.

If you can't meet with the group at the planned time, we welcome you to get in touch with us anyway, using the registration link to express your interest. We can provide information on how to participate in the transcription project independently, whenever fits your schedule, and still count it toward the Yale alumni group's tally.

I am a volunteer with the Oregon Humane Society Running Team.  We take active dogs out for runs in an industrial area in NE Portland.  This area had become increasingly filled with litter, which is unsightly and can be dangerous for the dogs, should they tread upon something sharp or pick something up in their mouths.  This event will beautify and make our running path safer for all.

Registration is limited to 50 participants.  This event is open to the Oregon Humane Society volunteer community and the Yale Club of Oregon and SW Washington.

Plirding! Observing birds while picking up trash with Keney Park Sustainability. Improve the environment for the beings you admire. Keney Park Sustainability Project aims to provide hands-on training, on-site demonstrations, education outreach, and community collaborations that help families become more self-sustainable and environmentally conscious while preserving the historic Keney Park.

Activities will include transplanting, weeding, mulching, and planting.

Who's Coming

May is Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Month in Canada. MS can strike anyone at anytime, and Canadians have one of the highest rates of MS in the world.

Joining the MS Walk means being involved in a community that is driven to improve the lives of those affected by the disease. Every person participating in and/or fundraising for the virtual MS Walk makes a lasting positive impact. To participate in this walk you are not under any obligation to fundraise or make a donation; awareness and education are a large part of the MS mission.

Walk with family and friends or solo in your home, around the block, in the park, or wherever else you choose and are able. No set guidelines as to distance walked. Be mindful of social distancing—keep safe!

Volunteers should join team Mighty Strong through the registration link. Please enter YDOS into field ‘Street 3’ on the registration form, so we can identify you.

Please join the Yale Club of Taipei on May 30th to clean up Shalun Beach for Yale Day of Service!

All alumni, current students, and family members first grade and above are welcome to join.

Beach clean-up tools, drinking water, and snacks will be provided, and there will also be a place to rest and use an indoor bathroom. Participants should:

• wear closed-toed shoes
• bring reusable water bottles
• bring reusable gardening/work gloves (though gloves will be available for those who do not have them)
• plan to wear a mask and social distance

The deadline for signing up is May 23rd, but event size is capped at 50 people, so make sure to sign up early!

Grow Native Massachusetts is looking for volunteers for our annual plant sale. We will hold three days of in-person sales from Wednesday June 9 through Friday June 11. Each day will be divided into shopping blocks which members will register for in advance so that we can limit crowd size.

To give you a better sense of what you’d be taking on, here is an overview of the volunteer schedule:

Monday June  7 AND Tuesday June 8  (Prep Days)

Morning Shift: Unload and sort plants from delivery trucks. Note: This is a work out! To those with some extra muscle, we need you here.

Afternoon Shift: Price, label, and inventory pots. Water and prune plants.

Wednesday June 9 THRU Friday June 11  (Sale Days)

Both Morning & Afternoon Shifts: A range of jobs including managing/ directing the flow of customers, stocking/ re-stocking plant tables, assisting customers, helping with check-out, and watering plants.

Note: On Wed and Thurs, the morning shift (4 hours) will be longer than the afternoon shift (3 hours). On Friday we are able to hold sales later into the day, so both shifts will last 4 hours.

Saturday June 12  (Wrap Up)

Morning Shift Only: Assist with the breakdown and disassembly of the event set-up. Note: If (and only if)  there are a significant numbers of plants left unsold by the end of the day on Friday, we will hold additional sales on Saturday morning. We will keep volunteers who sign-up for this date abreast of our contingency planning.

We strongly recommend that volunteers who want to purchase more than a few (i.e. 2 or 3) plants also sign-up to participate in a shopping block that they are not working. It makes busy sale days much easier to manage, and we will not be equipped to do any sales during prep days.

Join us live for a conversation with Juan Carlos Salinas ’03 MFA to learn more about the Yale Day of Service initiative, how it has pivoted in the past two years and how you can get involved no matter where you are! 

Juan Carlos was tapped as a 2020 Yale Day of Service honorary co-chair for his exemplary dedication to service. He is the founder of the Y Tu Tambien, the college access program of the La Unidad Latina Foundation, which unites Latino alumni from across the Ivy League to help students in need gain acceptance into their desired colleges, and provides school and career exploration workshops. He is also the chair and founding member of the Yale Latino Alumni Association of the Tri State Area and a founding board member of the Inter-Ivy League Latino Alumni Council. 

Juan Carlos currently serves as the director of education at Jamaica Center for Arts and Learning, and the executive director of the La Unidad Latina Foundation. He has developed and implemented curricula based on various artistic disciplines, social activism, and leadership skill-building for more than 25 New York City schools and cultural institutions. He also is a contributing writer of New York City's Blueprint for Theater Education.

Previously, Juan Carlos worked as education director of City Lights Youth Theater, associate director of education at Yale Repertory Theater, and education manager of Ars Nova and Ballet Hispanico. Recently, he oversaw the creation of the BFA Acting program at Long Island University Downtown, Brooklyn in partnership with the New Group Theater Company.

Juan Carlos graduated from Yale in 2003 with an MFA in Non-profit/Arts Management, with an emphasis in Education. He is a proud native of Rio Grande City, in Starr County, Texas.

South Bay Children's Health Center (SBCHC) provides quality mental health and dental services to low-income and at-risk children, teens, and young adults in the South Bay area of Los Angeles. Due to the continuing pandemic, the Champions for Children 5K Trail Run/Walk & Kids Fun Run, the major annual fundraiser for SBCHC, has shifted to a virtual platform for the second time, even as mental health needs continue to rise due to COVID-19 challenges.

Yale volunteers across the country and around the world can help this small, local non-profit continue supporting those in need by registering for the event using the Register button. The Yale Day of Service team is "YDOS #BoolaBoola"
