Problematic Use of Digital Technologies in Youth and Adults
Jun 4
9:00AM – 10:00AM
Sterling Law Buildings | Room: Levinson Auditorium — 127 Wall Street
Marc N. Potenza '87, '93 PhD, '94 MD, Professor of Psychiatry, Neuroscience and Child Study
The use of digital technologies and the internet has expanded considerably in our lifetimes and many parents may not feel ideally equipped to monitor and assess the online activities of their children. Youth growing up in digital environments (or “digital natives”) may experience both short- and long-term benefits – and adverse consequences – from their use of digital technologies. In this lecture, Professor Potenza will discuss changes in the use of digital technologies, how the American Psychiatric Association and the World Health Organization have reacted to these changes, and how healthy use of digital technologies may be possible. Videogaming, pornography, social media, shopping, and gambling will be discussed, as well as the effects of the Covid pandemic.
