This is the premier event for the Yale Alumni Health Network (YAHN). YAHN’s mission is to serve as a nexus for all health-related disciplines to foster networking and knowledge acquisition to spur innovation and drive development of our alumni’s careers - at every stage. YAHN brings together current and future Yale Alumni leaders from all sectors - medical practice, academia, law, finance, technology, engineering, policy, government, entertainment, journalism and beyond - that touch on health. Whether transforming the healthcare landscape by facilitating patient independence, assuaging suffering and preserving humanity through medical advance or inspiring the next generation to pursue STEM careers, legendary inventor Dean Kamen’s innovations tackle problems previously unsolved and are consistently at the forefront of device discovery. In this talk, Dean predicts the future, delving deeply into what to expect from technology, care delivery and beyond what we can imagine now. Dean is an inventor who holds more than a thousand U.S. and foreign patents, many of them for innovative medical devices that have expanded the frontiers of global health care. In 1976, he founded his first medical device company, AutoSyringe, Inc., to manufacture and market wearable infusion pumps. He founded DEKA Research & Development Corporation to develop internally generated inventions as well as to provide research and development for major corporate clients. Kamen led DEKA's development of the HomeChoiceTM, a system that allows patients to be dialyzed in the privacy and comfort of their home. Kamen also led the development of slide preparation technology for the CYTYC (now Hologic Inc.) ThinPrep® Pap Test. Under his leadership, DEKA teams have developed a wide range of products, including the LUKE advanced prosthetic arm to improve the quality of life for returning injured soldiers (for DARPA), the HydroflexTM surgical irrigation pump (for C.R. Bard), the CrownTM stent (for Johnson & Johnson), the iBOTTM Mobility System, and the Segway® Human Transporter. Dean also founded FIRST® (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an organization dedicated to motivating the next generation to understand, use and enjoy science and technology. Kamen was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Engineering and Technology by the Yale School of Engineering and Applied Science in 2015. New York, NY — 50 Vanderbilt Avenue false
