Lamar Center for the Study of Frontiers & Borders Topic: Family Vacationlands in the Fifties: Why We Loved Cape Cod and Pennsylvania Dutch Country The Ford Motor Company began to market its station wagon as a vacation vehicle in 1947. The first Holiday Inn opened in 1953. Though motels and station wagons have longer histories, the intersection of various trends—the postwar baby boom, a robust economy that truly served as a rising tide across class lines, and a marketing effort that targeted suburban households—produced a dynamic increase in family vacations. Such vacations, as much as television sets and refrigerators, became an affordable luxury for average families. These trends have been noted by others. Less studied is the impact this had on areas too far to become part of the suburban periphery of growing metropolitan regions, but the perfect distance to become family vacationlands. With this overview as an opening backdrop, this talk will address three related questions: Why did these areas appeal to young suburban families? The following is a quote captures the subject of this session. It comes from the 1999 Alumni Magazine article - see link below: “Yale had long perceived itself to be an institution with responsibilities to the nation at large, but the way it envisioned those responsibilities had changed over time. At the level of admissions, the institution’s changing self-perception was reflected in the debate over the meaning of diversity.” http://archives.yalealumnimagazine.com/issues/99_12/admissions.html Viewers are strongly encouraged to read this article before the discussion.
