Home fires claim seven lives every day, but you can help change that. Join other Yale alums for a local Sound the Alarm event in Cleveland's Edgewater neighborhood, sponsored by the American Red Cross of Northern Ohio, in partnership with the Cleveland Fire Department, to visit homes close to the Louisa May Alcott Elementary School to educate residents on fire safety and install smoke detectors where needed.

Parking should be available at the school at 10308 Baltic Road, between W. 103rd and W. 104th Streets, where teams will gather prior to the event start at 9:30 a.m.

No prior experience is necessary; the Red Cross and its Fire Department partners will provide all the training needed. Young people age 13-17 are welcome to participate with parental/guardian consent, but those age 13, 14 or 15 will also need the parent or guardian to be with them at the event.

This event will be held rain or shine on Saturday, April 22, 2023.

Join fellow Yalies and other members of the community to install free smoke alarms and share safety information in this at-risk community.  As volunteers, we first will get an orientation and training by the Red Cross over a continental breakfast. Then we will work in small groups--under the aegis of the Red Cross--to visit homes, install smoke alarms, and provide home fire safety education to residents.

In any case we will be providing a valuable service to the community and helping to save lives--while volunteering alongside other Yalies and community members. Families welcome! Children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Did you know home fires claim seven lives every day--or thousands of lives per year?  Having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half!

Note: The link provided will direct you to a login page where you can create a volunteer account on the ARC's portal or sign in if you already have an account.
