  China’s long history as a powerful agrarian state has distracted many from its very real engagement with the ocean. Its contacts with South and Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and East Africa date back to the year 1000 and even before. Drawing on information from shipwrecks, maps, and descriptions of voyages and foreign lands, this talk traces China’s long engagement with its maritime neighbors, a topic of particular importance given China's recent expansion into the South China Sea.

Drawing on images and personal items from the collection of her family, and from her own words in her autobiography, the exhibition offers a glimpse of Motley, brilliantly at work, from her childhood in New Haven through her career as a Civil Rights attorney, New York Senator, and federal judge. Meet at the front entrance to the Law School. This tour is limited to 25 people; repeated at 10:30 AM.

  The past three years have confirmed and extended findings and prior predictions on the climatological changes consequent to greenhouse gas release.  In his talk, Dean Vermund will review selected climatological highlights, discuss mitigation efforts, and bridge these challenges to implications for human health. Serious consequences of global climate change are resulting in adverse health effects. Hence, the presentation will address strategies for adaptation to planetary warming, loss of species diversity, and human population growth.
