May 25
3:00PM – 4:00PM
Luce Hall | Room: Auditorium — 34 Hillhouse Avenue
The Papers of Benjamin Franklin, launched at Yale in 1954 and currently funded by the generosity of the Class of 1954, has published 43 volumes of annotated papers and correspondence, to date, out of a projected 47 volumes. The edition has been hailed as “the gold standard of documentary editing,” “a model to be emulated in all respects,” and most recently, “among the premier scholarly accomplishments of the twentieth and twenty-first centuries.” This praise speaks to more than the extraordinary richness of Franklin’s life and writings; it acknowledges the care and scholarship that have been brought to bear in presenting these manuscripts to the world, 80% of which had never before been published. Editor-in-Chief Ellen R. Cohn will speak about some of the most unusual, exciting, and groundbreaking discoveries to come out of this project during her forty-year association with the Franklin Papers.
