The Yale Alumni Service Corps (YASC) will work in the community of Cantera, an under-served and densely populated neighborhood in San Juan. Surrounded by bodies of water to the north, south and east, Cantera is a peninsula that stretches out into the contiguous San Jose and Corozos lagoons. The community was founded in the early 20th century by squatters from other parts of Puerto Rico. In the following decades, they successfully resisted all attempts to evict them. But the threat of eviction remains present (source IPS News). The community was heavily damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and earthquake in 2020, but the government has made significant strides to rebuild many areas.

YASC will partner once again with friends at Instituto Nueva Escuela (INE or New School Institute). Founded in 2008, INE is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit organization dedicated to improving Puerto Rican students’ academic and socio-emotional outcomes through the implementation of Montessori education in the public school setting. It is currently operating in 53 schools and growing. Our service trip will focus on the Escuela Manuel Elzaburu y Vizcarrondo, a pre-k through sixth grade, public elementary school with 261 students, located in the heart of Cantera. The school was badly damaged by Hurricane Maria and the earthquake in 2020, but it has been recently renovated. Principal José Ricardo De Jesús and school staff are very much looking forward to hosting our group of volunteers in March 2023!

Y2Y provides meals and overnight shelter for homeless young adults in the Cambridge area. Normally staffed by undergraduates, the shelter is always in need of volunteers during school breaks.

This March, YaleBoston has committed to provide volunteer coverage for a dinner shift on Thursday the 16th. Volunteers will prepare and serve meals, clean the space, and assist the shelter staff in other tasks as needed.

The Yale Club of Hartford is a sponsor of the event.  During the regional finals, Yale Club members will judge entries, and three teams of Club members will select the Club's Samuel Morse, Eli Whitney, and David Bushnell awards.  The Yale Club awards will be presented in person on June 10, 2023, at the University of Connecticut.

Volunteers should register their employer as Yale Club of Hartford. The Connecticut Invention Convention will alert the organizer of members of Team Yale Club of Hartford.

CROS Gleaning is a program of CROS Ministries, in partnership with area food banks and other food distribution agencies in Palm Beach and Martin Counties. It is a food recovery strategy that allows produce that is below top market grade or unmarketable, but equally nutritious and beneficial to be harvested and distributed to the food insecure of Palm Beach and Martin Counties instead of being plowed back into the soil.  

Volunteers will be picking produce in the field.

Please note the following:
-The gleaning will be in the Boynton Beach/Delray Beach area.  The exact location will not be known until Monday, April 27.
-Volunteers must be age 5 or older; All gleaners still in elementary, middle or high school must be accompanied by a supervising adult. This includes high school students 18 years of age or older.
-All volunteers must sign the CROS Ministries liability waiver in addition to signing the YDOS paperwork.

What to Bring and Wear:
-Bring your own water, snacks, and gloves.
-It is often good to dress in layers. In the morning, it is likely to be colder and damp, wearing a long sleeve shirt and long pants is recommended. As it gets warmer, a short sleeve shirt may be better. Closed toed shoes are required. No flip flops or open toed or heel shoes are permitted.
-It is recommended that all gleaners wear hats in the field, apply sunscreen, and have bug spray handy in case insects are an issue.
-Please bring a three to five gallon pail with a handle if possible.  It is an excellent container to carry through the field. Fill it and empty it into the packing box or bin. CROS Ministries will have some on hand for you, but it would be best if we could bring our own.

-No pets please, it is not safe for them and a violation of food safety practices.

-Bathroom facilities are unavailable in most gleaning fields. It is advisable to use the bathroom prior to coming to the field.

-If the fields are too wet because of rain, the gleaning may be canceled.

Join the Women's Leadership Initiative in decorating cards for Citymeals recipients. Most of the meal recipients live alone, many rarely or never leave their homes. For them to get a personalized note or card can brighten their day. One simple act will make huge impact.

No advance sign-up for this volunteering event is needed. Just show up and decorate a card.

G.R.O.W.E.R.S., Inc. @ Greenbrier offers a multi-path approach to providing horticultural education, employment opportunities and therapy for adults with developmental and physical disabilities. Register and join us any time between 9 a.m. and noon. This event is co-sponsored by the DiversAbility at Yale (DAY) Affinity Group and the Future Leaders of Yale (FLY) Affinity Group.
 
Volunteers will help with watering, planting, and other gardening tasks. Children of all ages are welcome to participate.
 
Please bring your own garden/work gloves, water bottles, clothing layers, sun protection and wear clothes that can get dirty.

Garden tools will be provided, although you are welcome to bring your own. 

Volunteers are invited to gather for a picnic lunch in the park at noon. Bring your own lunch (coolers provided for storage) and DAY will supply water, drinks, and snacks!
 
Street parking is available on Cliff Street. Enter the gate; greenhouses are right inside the gate.

Please share this with friends, family, and colleagues; everyone is welcome to participate. We do ask that all volunteers register in advance, as the number of volunteers for this event is capped at 15.

Join fellow Yalies and other members of the community to install free smoke alarms and share safety information in this at-risk community.  We will work in small groups--under the aegis of the Red Cross--to visit homes, install smoke alarms, and provide home fire safety education to residents. Training will be provided on site so previous experience is not needed.

The event will be a fun day of reaching out to neighbors and making the community safer. When everyone has arrived, there will be a continental breakfast, you will get to choose what role you would like to do and be provided with on-site training. The team will receive supplies such as smoke alarms, tools, educational materials, and a map of your route for the day. Then it's time to head out!

Most of your day will be spent visiting homes, installing smoke alarms, and providing home fire safety education to residents. You may be given scheduled appointments at particular homes on your route, or you may be knocking on doors to offer to install free smoke alarms, or a combination of both. In either case, you will be providing a valuable service to your community and helping to save lives. We’ll finish the day with lunch at the firehouse and a tally of how many homes were made safer.

Families welcome! Children under 13 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian.

Did you know home fires claim seven lives every day--or thousands of lives per year?  Having working smoke alarms can cut the risk of death by half!

Join the Yale Club of the Palm Beaches to volunteer with the Boca Helping Hands in their "Backpacks Program" to help provide weekend meal kits to elementary school students facing food insecurity across south Palm Beach County. Please join us for this important initiative and help us give back to our local community!

• There is no minimum age, but the project is not well-suited for small children. All volunteers under the age of 18 must have a parent/guardian signature on the waiver provided in the registration.
• Please wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes (e.g., sneakers).
• Parking is available in the Justin D. Webb Training Center lot across the street. 

Volunteer limit is 15 people. If you sign up and can no longer attend, please notify us in order to make space for others.

Paddle for the Cure is much more than a day of kayak/paddleboard races. You do not have to race to come. You can watch the races or browse the booths at the pavilion. Bring the whole family for live music, food, a silent auction, and children's activities.

No fee/donation is required to attend and any proceeds raised will benefit Coins for Alzheimer's Research Trust (CART). Anyone who wishes to join the kayak race should contact Constance Spencer and she will sign you up for free!
