  The Class of ’90 is proud to boast several highly acclaimed, nationally recognized novelists in our ranks. Join us for a panel featuring four of these luminaries as they discuss their education as writers at Yale, their journeys into literary stardom, and the creative and social challenges and questions facing writers of fiction today.

  Panelists: Liam Callanan, Susan Choi, James Hannaham, and Min Jin Lee.

  Moderator: Fred Strebeigh, Senior Lecturer Emeritus in English and in Forestry and Environmental Studies

• 1955 | Uncovering the Lost History of Violence in Congress

  Joanne Freeman, Class of 1954 Professor of American History, the author of The Field of Blood: Violence in Congress and the Road to Civil War, reveals the U.S. Congress as we've never seen it. In the decades leading up to the Civil War, pushing, shoving, fistfights, knives, guns, and mass melees were common enough to seem routine. Most of this mayhem was censored out of the period's equivalent of the Congressional Record. Based on more than a decade of detective work, Professor Freeman's research uncovered this vein of violence, discovering over 70 physically violent incidents on the House and Senate floors – and changing our understanding of the roots of the Civil War in the process.

  Classmate Ted Stebbins is Consultative Curator of American Art at Harvard's Fogg Museum (2001-present), and was the John Moors Curator of American Paintings at the Boston Museum of Fine Arts (1977-1999). From 1968 to 1977, he was Curator of American Paintings at Yale, as well as Associate Professor of the History of Art.
