Single or double kayaks are available for use, and children of all ages are welcome to share a kayak with an adult (children over 6 may be able to get their own kid's kayak). NO experience required! The CDB is a non-profit (located a short distance from the Long Wharf Drive food trucks, IKEA, and the Hotel Marcel) which has partnered with the City of New Haven to provide affordable community-oriented waterfront activities. Every year the CDB hosts several days when the public can participate in FREE activities, including kayaking, rowing a dragon boat, the use of Concept2 RowErg machines, and rowing a 5-person shell (4 sweep rowers + 1 coxswain). We will also share with the public information about other programs and services provided by the CDB, including yoga classes, rowing classes, recreational sailing, sailing classes, swimming lessons, and engaging youth focused activities including rowing and academic tutoring. This Day of Service project is designed for adults, but family members 15 years or older who are prepared to participate are welcome to register along with their parents/guardians. If you cannot join us on May 19, but are interested in learning more about CDB programs, we will be hosting five additional "Community Boating Days" on June 22, July 21, August 3, August 19, and September 21. Please visit: http://www.canaldock.org/events In the event of significant inclement weather we will move the event to Saturday June 22. If possible, please keep the rain date open! If the enthusiasm for this event is high we may host another YDOS event during one of the other summer "Community Boating Days". Please contact Mara.Balk@yale.edu for more information. Your support and enthusiasm are appreciated. This page describes the second shift (10:00 AM - 1:00 PM).  Hopefully, the alumni who register for the first shift can stay after 10:00 AM, so we can spend some time together. If possible, please arrive around 9:30 to make the transition between the shifts smooth. 1) The second shift will continue helping the guests enjoy the various ACTIVITIES happening near the dockhouse and on the water: Showing the guests how to use the Concept2 RowErg machines. Helping the guests select the proper size personal flotation device (PFD) required for all water activities (for comfort and best flotation). Helping the guests get in and out of the kayaks and the Quattro shell (capacity: four guest "sweep" rowers plus one experienced coxswain). Experienced kayakers can help guide the guests around the New Haven harbor! Rowing the dragon boat! Giving tours of the boathouse. Enjoying a game of cornhole! 2) After the CDB "Community Boating Day" activities end at noon, the volunteers will bring all the equipment back to the dockhouse: Moving 10 Rowing Machines back to the dockhouse. Rinsing the kayaks, before returning them to the dockhouse. Derigging and cleaning the Quattro, before returning it to the dockhouse. Removing the dragon boat head and the tail, before moving the dragon boat back to the dockhouse. Return the rack with the PFDs (personal flotation devices) back to the dockhouse. Finally, some logistics: 1) Please register via the Yale DOS VolunteerHub portal ( http://yaledayofservice.volunteerhub.com/ ). 2) ALSO sign the separate 2024 CDB Waiver Packet, which is required of all CDB volunteers: http://www.canaldock.org/events-1/volunteer-community-boating-day-1 If you are bringing a family member who is between 15, but not yet 18, their CDB waiver needs to be signed by a parent or guardian. 3) Different styles of PFDs are provided (and are required if you want to walk down to the floating dock), but if you own a PFD which you prefer, please bring it. 4) There will be shade, but to protect your skin and eyes please consider packing sunscreen, sun glasses, and a sun hat. 5) Restrooms are available. 6) And the most important answer is "yes". There is FREE street parking is available along Long Wharf Drive, across from the boathouse. We hope to see you on the water! Canal Dock Boathouse — 475 Long Wharf Drive false

Internationally renowned silent-film musicians Donald Sosin and Joanna Seaton perform live score!

After a train crash, a renowned pianist wakes up in horror: his hands have been amputated and replaced with the hands of an executed murderer. Depicting an artist’s continuous descent into paranoia and madness, The Hands of Orlac is a haunting example of German Expressionism that reunites Dr. Caligari director Robert Wiene and actor Conrad Veidt in another spellbinding performance.

Donald Sosin and Joanna Seaton bring their unique blend of keyboards, vocals and percussion to major film festivals—New York, TriBeCa, San Francisco, Seattle, Denver, Telluride, Yorkshire—and to MoMA, Film at Lincoln Center, AFI Silver, and other notable venues. They perform often at Italy’s annual silent film retrospectives in Bologna and Pordenone. They have appeared numerous times at Yale, Harvard, Brown, Cornell, and Emory Universities, and created scores for over 65 silent film DVDs on the Criterion, Kino, Milestone, Flicker Alley and other labels. Their workshops in silent film music and songwriting are popular with students of all ages.

Robert Wiene directed the silent horror film The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari in the aftermath of World War I, while the horrors of industrialized warfare and fanatical nationalism persisted. Political instability, hyperinflation, mass unemployment, and urban conflict defined the 1920s in Germany, giving rise to expressionist cinema. These conditions inspired hallucinatory films full of nightmares, mystery, crime, madness, and desire. Films at the Whitney presents two striking examples from this unique creative period in partnership with the Yale University Art Gallery and the exhibition “Munch and Kirchner: Anxiety and Expression.”
